Overview

The College of Agriculture, Raichur is located at the Head Quarters of the University of Agricultural Sciences, Raichur six kms. away from Raichur city. The College is one of the premier institutes in Hyderabad-Karnataka region for imparting education and conduct of research and extension activities in agriculture. 

 

Historical background

College of Agriculture was started in 1984 as constituent College of UAS, Bangalore and was accommodated temporarily in the building of Regional Research Station and Agriculture Engineering Institute, Raichur. During 1988, First batch of B.Sc. (Agri) Degree programme was passed out from College of Agriculture, Raichur through Trimester system. Semester system of education to both UG & PG programs was introduced in 1996. Further, Bifurcation and creation of University of Agricultural Sciences, Raichur, from UAS Dharwad in 2009 exclusively covering Hyderabad-Karnataka region spanning six districts viz. Bidar, Kalaburagi, Yadgir, Raichur, Bellary and Koppal was the stepping stone for the development of Kalyan Karnataka region.

Growth of Institution

College of Agriculture, Raichur was awarded the Winner of e-World 2012 Awards for Best ICT Enabled Agricultural Initiative of the Year by Centre for Science, Development and Media Studies and ELets Technomedia Pvt. Ltd. Further, the college of Agriculture, Raichur is also presented the Best Institute in Agriculture by Agriculture Innovation: Congress & awards held in Mumbai during January, 2020.

Under graduation programme has the practical and hands-on-training classes conducted through brief orientation in class rooms followed by laboratory analysis or field visit or visit to orchards or visit to cooperative societies, banks or NGOs, progressive farmers, or exploration visits etc. as and when necessary depending upon the type of course and content of particular practical curriculum. The students are also exposed to hands on training work through experiential learning programme during final year of their programme.

About 27 hectares is covered under horticulture and botanical garden. Nearly, 16 hectares of land is reserved for instructional farm, wherein students’ activities such as crop production, micro plot experimental techniques and post graduate research work are undertaken.The field laboratory provides all the facilities required for the students and staff to undertake all field level practices. The instructional farm is well laid out with roads, irrigation facilities, drains, water ponds, water ponds, water pipelines, threshing yard, etc., to take up the field work efficiently.

 

The modern laboratories with specialized facilities for imparting teaching and research work viz., tissue culture laboratory, central instrumentation unit, ARIS centre and computer lab, a unit of plant health clinic are established. All these laboratories have state of art facilities with high-tech instruments like plant growth chamber, walk-in-germinator, atomic absorption spectrophotometer, liquid scintillation unit, UV spectrophotometer, distillation unit, flame photometer, binocular microscope, etc.

 
 The college has developed specialized facilities namely poly house, green house, and glass house for imparting teaching and carrying out the research work by faculties and students. These protected structures have also been established to grow quality flowers and vegetables which help for undergoing hands on training by the students of final year under experiential learning programme.

The college has a well established sericulture unit which provides hands on training to students on silkworm rearing and silk production. Apiculture unit is established with 10 honey bee colonies for hands on training on honey bee maintenance. Insectary is established to maintain the insect culture for the experimental purpose.

 

The college has its own dairy unit with average milk production of 125 litres per day. There is an area of 25 acres land kept for fodder production to the dairy animals. Further, the college has a general veterinary clinic for on-campus and local animals from nearby villages. The clinic serve medical needs of the animals from the surrounding villages.
