eSAP: a novel IT application in Crop Health Management

Pests, basically herbivorous insects, microbial diseases, weeds and nutritional disorders have always plagued agriculture resulting losses greater than Rs. 50,000 crores annually in India. Electronic Solutions against Agricultural Pests (e-SAP) is an IT solution in the field of crop health management designed and developed by UAS, Raichur.

What is eSAP?

eSAP system consists of three applications namely, field application which works in the field and is in the hands of field users; an expert application which will be with the subject experts (scientists) and a web application which provides multimedia reports to administrators and policy makers based on the field data for quick decision.

The field application helps in identification of the problems (like insect pests, diseases, nutrition disorders and weeds), quantification of the problem (through scientific survey protocols) and intensity based advisory (which can be printed out through thermal printer like prescription slips). All the above activities happens ‘offline’ on ‘real time’ and ‘without expert support’ with 95% accuracy. In some difficult situations (like new pests or new symptoms), the field problem will be transferred to expert who will resolve it on real time. The field application also allows to take feedback from the farmer after the advisory is provided thus enabling follow up of the situation. Further, it also provides ‘Best practices’ to the farmers and ‘more information’ to field user to enrich their knowledge.

Expert application helps in resolving undiagnosed problems sent by field user, creates forum for inter group discussion, provision to call field user and the concerned farmer to get more details and disseminate ad-hoc recommendation in case of ‘new problems’

Web application helps in generating multimedia reports (like graphs, pie charts, GIS maps, tables etc.) for the benefit of administrators, scientists and policy makers to take quick decisions. This also helps in content management, device management, user management etc.

Development and Deployment

e-SAP was first designed and developed by UAS, Raichur during 2011-12 under RKVY grants. It was deployed on pilot scale in six districts of Kalyana Karnataka region from 2012-2015 benefiting over 1,00,000 farmers covering 20 crops. Looking into its potential, other SAUs of the state (UASB, UASD and UAHSS) adopted eSAP during 2016-17. At present eSAP is adopted by Govt. of Karnataka for its implementation and operations through KSDA and KSHD. Over 4500 officers of both agriculture and horticulture are conducting the

pest surveillance cum advisory through eSAP since 2019-20. At present eSAP is supporting field user with 53 agriculture and horticulture crops capable of resolving over 1000 problems. All the SAUs of Karnataka, UHS Bagalkot and ICAR-IIHIR, Bengaluru are knowledge partners in eSAP.

Tene Agricultural Solutions Pvt. Ltd., Bengaluru is the IT partner for eSAP
